What actually makes a room sound good

Not the gear. A short, non-mystical explanation of why some rooms work and others don't — useful whether you're booking one or building one.

People talk about rooms as though the sound were a mysterious property, like a piano having a soul. It isn't. It's four fairly ordinary physical things, and knowing them makes you better at both booking rooms and building them.

1. Size, which you cannot fake

Sound takes time to bounce. In a small room, reflections come back so fast they arrive almost on top of the original — which the ear reads not as space but as a boxy, coloured tone.

In a large room the reflections arrive late enough to be perceived as ambience: a sense of the space around the source.

This is why big live rooms are valuable and why no amount of equipment substitutes. You cannot make a small room large. You can only make it less small-sounding by killing reflections, which trades the boxiness for deadness. That's often the right trade — but dead is not the same as spacious.

Practical version: if you need a big drum sound, you need a big room. Everything else is negotiable.

2. Shape, and why parallel walls are a nuisance

Two parallel surfaces let sound bounce back and forth in a repeating pattern, which reinforces certain frequencies and cancels others. The result is a room with a lumpy response — some notes ring, others disappear.

This is why purpose-built rooms have non-parallel walls and angled ceilings, and why an ordinary rectangular room needs treatment to behave.

For a booker, this is why a room's description of its treatment tells you more than its dimensions alone. For a host, it's why treatment isn't decoration.

3. Treatment, which is mostly about the low end

Most people over-treat high frequencies and under-treat low ones, because foam is cheap and bass traps are bulky.

High frequencies are easy to absorb — a bit of soft material does it. Low frequencies have long wavelengths and go straight through anything thin, which is why a room covered in foam still has a boomy corner.

4. Noise floor, the one nobody photographs

How quiet is the room when nothing is happening?

Traffic, air conditioning, a fridge two rooms away, the hum of a dimmer switch. None of it shows up in photographs and all of it is on your recording, permanently, under everything.

This is the single most common problem with home and project studios, and it's the reason quiet rooms in noisy cities are worth what they're worth. For anything with a lot of space in it — voice, acoustic instruments, spoken word — noise floor matters more than almost anything else.

If you're booking and the recording matters, ask directly: how quiet is it, and is there anything that hums.

What matters much less than people think

The console. Almost nobody tracking today needs a large-format desk. Its presence tells you about the room's history, not its sound.

The microphone locker beyond the first few. A room with five well-chosen mics used properly beats a room with fifty and no plan.

Plugins. Genuinely irrelevant to whether the room sounds good.

How it looks. There is no correlation. Some of the best-sounding rooms are ugly industrial units, and some beautiful studios were designed by someone who cared more about the photographs.

The useful summary

If you're booking: match the room's size to what you're recording, ask about noise, and read the treatment description. If a host can describe their room's acoustics in specific terms, they know what they have.

If you're building: fix the noise floor first, then the corners, then everything else. And accept the size you have — a small room used honestly for what small rooms are good at beats a small room pretending to be big.
